Bf-109

Postby Bass » Mon Aug 18, 2014 10:46 am

Ref jankees beautiful Kurfurst repaint of the 109.
Just wanted to show the A2A Messerschmidt Bf-109.
What a nice powerfull whining Jumo engine sound that can give a heavy climbing "upstairs"!! That was one of the problems England needed to solve with the Spitfire and the Hurricane

A formidable enemy indeed for the Spitfire and Hurricane. That's why they chose the Hurricane to shoot down the Bombers and the Spitfire to challenge the ME 109 fighter escort. Despite the Spitfire's deficiencies, they shot down more of them thean they shot down of us. Otherwise there would have been a very different result to WWII.

Quite right, logjam.
And the problems went on and on! When Germany launched the Focke Wulf, Englands problems really got high! New and more powerful engines/guns/designs were made to solve this new problem!!!

When Herman, in a clear abuse moment, for the first saw a P-51 Mustang, he said:
"Now we are loosing the war"!!

The Spitfire was developed for a defence role, which meant a poor range. Later developments couldn't match the requirements of a long range escort which the Mustang could given it's huge belly tank. Jerry addressed this with the M.E. 262 and Hitler's revenge, the V1 and V2 rockets. Good job he didn't unleash these in the beginning. Still the M.E 109 made its mark as one of the better fighting machines of that era. Many 109's were sold to foreign powers, such as Eire and Spain and were still flying operationally long after the Spitfire was laid to rest.

Yes, and lets not forget the heavy water he got from Norway

(Many are still wondering where it went!)

Just an important detail, concerning life in Spain of this plane:

Bf 109's were tested in Spanish Civil war (types B,D, E). Spain bought the licence manufacture in 1942 of G type, but shortage of DB engines led to use Hispano Suiza engines and finally Rolls Royce Merlin engines. First deliveries Began in 1957! and were retired in 1965. Take into account that Spain received the first Sabres in 1955.

Yellow nose is a Hispano HA 1112, Merlin engine cannon in wing.

That is of course correct in theory. It very often didn't work out like that in practice. The Hurricane was a good gun platform & could out-turn the 109.
