It's interesting what annoys people. I have no problem with shortening pence to P. In fact I use it all the time myself..I am also on a Crusade to remove the annoying/infuriating/overly-used American/would-be-American word; "Awesome" from the English Language... ....!
One of the things that really irritates me is the increasing popularity of the adverb overly. The LY is usually completely unnecessary & over-used or overused would be more appropriate in this example.
